Village of Chambave, Aosta Valley

Village of Chambave

A pleasant village in the centre of the Aosta Valley at a few kilometres from Saint-Vincent, Chambave (486 m a.s.l.) was inhabited since ancient times.

At Mount Tsailloun, between Pontey and Chambave, there was a mining activity, since the Iron Age. During the Roman domination, the Consular Route ran through the modern village. A milestone is now positioned outside the Parish Church (dedicated to St. Lorenz), one of the oldest in the Aosta Valley.

Chambave is also a vitivinical area of old traditions, thanks to a microclima characterised by limited precipitations.

The first mention dates back to 1269 in consequence of a legacy to the parish of Chambave, whereas the first historical data date back to 1494 (Charles Passerin of Entrèves) in which we find the visit of Charles VIII, king of France, to George of Challant, and during this occasion they were helped to the clairet and the raisin of Chambave.

Nowadays in Chambave you can find the wine growing and producing co-operative "La Crotta di Vegneron", with the most up-to-date installations. Here many high quality wines are produced thanks to the grapes of small territorial areas, such as Nus, Verrayes, Saint-Denis, Chambave, Châtillon, Saint-Vincent. Noteworthy, the production of rare grappa, too.

Finally, to remember the dairy of Champagne, where you can find the production coming from Verrayes, Saint-Denis and Chambave.

Chambave has been able, without any doubt, to keep its habitat within human measure, where hospitality, warmth, genuine products and the natural environment are a standard of life. In summer there are a lot of occasions for trips and excursions.
