Village of Saint-Vincent, Aosta Valley
Situated in a large dell, in the heart of the biggest catchment basin of the Alps, sheltered from the northern winds by the Mount Zerbion, the Commune of Saint-Vincent (575 m. a.s.l.), which includes some different hamlets scattered in the meadows from 400 to 1600 m a.s.l., enjoys of a particularly mild climate. Saint-Vincent, the so-called "Riviera of the Alps", thanks to its healthy climate, to the fertility of its land, to its limpid springs of which some are miraculously medicinal, has been a centre already inhabited in the Iron and Bronze Age.
During the Roman domination, it was an important centre. Noteworthy, the Romanesque parish church, which was built on the ruins of a Roman villa equipped with baths. Nearby, the Consular Route of the Gaul, with the remains of a bridge over the Cillian River. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled by the Family of Montjovet and it was an important trading centre. In Saint-Vincent in fact there was a hospice for the wayfarers and a lot of noble mansions of which a great number was destroyed during the wars around 1630.
In 1770 the abbot Perret discovered the beneficial properties of the waters of the "Fons Salutis"; these baths, thanks also to the construction of the "Monjovetta", the road which made possible the transit of the carriages from Piedmont, helped the tourist development of the village.
The present thermal establishment dominates the centre of Saint-Vincent from above. The miraculous waters of this spring are particularly efficacious for stomach, intestine, liver and bile ducts diseases, for metabolism disorders, for some skin diseases, for gastrointestinal disorders of the infancy, thanks to the plentiful presence of sulphates and sodic and magnesic carbonates, for the richness of carbon acid and the presence of the ions of iodine and bromine.
The biggest gambling house of Europe, the "Casino de la Vallée", a modern congresses centre, numberless leisure, sport and cultural opportunities are the modern frame of those artistic, climatic and thermal values that from the 19th century have made Saint-Vincent become a first-class international tourist centre.
During the winter season, at 1650 m. a.s.l., there is the small, charming ski resort of Col de Joux. Thanks to the central position of Saint-Vincent, you can easily reach all the other ski resorts of the Valley.
During the hot season, sunny paths leading to villages and mountain pastures allow you to go on charming mountain hikes where natural environment is still intact.
